New Person

If you have ever wanted to be someone different, just wait until you reach your forties. Recently I’ve come to realize just how different I am from my twenty – even thirty- something self.

Our work space is open. There are no cubicles. You have a small desk and close neighbors – the better to cram as many people in a room as possible. My team is made up of mostly twenty-somethings who still have dreams and aspirations -seeing this job as just their first on the path of a great career. Ah I remember having that job, too. The one that would launch your career to greatness.

So they have a lot of energy – which is good because to advance at this company you need to be willing to socialize. That means attending after hour events or better yet helping to plan those after hours events. I’m too cynical to care anymore about ‘climbing’ a corporate ladder. I have a sneaky suspicion that all that is waiting at the top is a noose.

Since we sit so close together, I can’t help but overhear their many conversations which usually lead to laughter and giggles for five minutes. That is fine on occasion but this is all day, everyday. I would like to think the twenty-something me wouldn’t have even given this a second thought. It’s just people talking at work. That is still allowed, right? The thirty-something me might have not been thrilled with it but it wouldn’t have bothered her. The forty-something me finds this distraction completely annoying and here is why.

It’s disrespectful. Have some common courtesy for those working around you. Take a break if you want to talk about gossip, other employees, or the latest funny YouTube video. I feel like I’m in high school again. It would be alright if I felt eighteen but instead I feel forty-something knowing this behavior shouldn’t be accepted.

That felt good to write it all out. I doubt it will improve but at least it has shown me that I am a different person than I used to be. Let’s hope that is more of a positive than negative.

A Farewell to Ibuprofen

Ibuprofen is my go-to pain reliever. It has been a staple in my life ever since I landed my first job out of college over twenty years ago.

I worked at a television station in the production department. Working there gave me many headaches as I thought surely I was allergic to the place and to the people. Still I managed through many eight hour shifts thanks in part to ibuprofen.

Ibuprofen also helped me bare the pain of impacted wisdom teeth and then removal of said wisdom teeth. I have taken many ibuprofen tablets for PMS cramps. It also helped with pain from two surgeries: a myomectomy and years later, a c-section.

Lately I have been devouring ibuprofen for sinus headaches and allergy symptoms. But alas, it looks like those days are over. Results from my physical show elevated liver levels – which I’m not sure what that means only that my doctor asked me if I took ibuprofen to which I said yes. Then she said to stop that. My

2015 Goals Update – May

Wow. Already May, huh? This is month five of 2015. Let’s see how those goals are coming along.

Here it is. The last day of March already.

Freelance full-time
(Feb)Still would like to do this but exploring options right now.
March – Still wanting to do this and thinking either by the end of the year of next spring is my goal to make it happen.
May – This month I plan to actually do some writing for two content websites. I’ve worked with them before but it has been a while. I plan to write 2-3 articles for each.

Debt Free
(Feb)working to dwindle down the smallest student loan which should be paid in March. Two more to go and then the car. This goal is pretty much on track.
March – The IRS wants more of our money for taxes so this will hinder paying this off until April.
May – Got the IRS their money and also knocked out another student loan. 2 more to go. Both are $2800 so should be relatively fast. Then it is just the vehicle.

Save at least $3K
(Feb)I haven’t started saving this yet.
March – no change. Haven’t started saving.
May – Sadly no savings.

WRITE
(Feb)Have written very little. Have to do more.
March – Have done a few blog posts and have an idea for Camp Nano which will start in April. I have a goal of 15,000 words.
May – Failed Camp Nano. Had less than 3K words. But I am working on a novel idea and a short story.

Draw
(Feb)I’ve drawn a little bit and bought a drawing book that I’ve yet to open but looks promising.
March – I try to draw everything – at least something. My new project is work on one comic for a week and then post the best drawing of it.
May – I haven’t drawn much. Have plenty of ideas but just can’t get them out of my head. ARRGGHH!!!

Lose Weight and RUN!
(Feb)have gained a pound. Must tighten up this even if it means doing a diet like Atkins to get started just to see some progress.
March – Not much progress here. I did buy a stepper exercise thing that I enjoy using and am gaining some stamina. Now that it is better weather it will be time to get out more. That is if the pollen doesn’t dictate otherwise.
May – Have lost 9 pounds but haven’t started running yet. The goal is to do a 5K by September.

Organize and clean house
(Feb)House is still an utter chaos but have started working on a plan.
March – The living room is now in order. This weekend we will shampoo carpets, wash curtains, and rearrange furniture.
May – Downstairs not bad – The big stuff is done but still plenty to do.

(Feb)While I haven’t had a lot of progress, I hope the next update to have the clutter under control and to have lost 5 pounds. Baby steps are better than no steps at all.
March – Not too many updates and not where I’d hope to be. But that is the whole reason for doing an update is to remember these goals and to work on them.
May – I feel good about where I am. Ofcourse I would like more progress on the writing and drawing but I feel the more I do to organize our home, the more focused I can be on other tasks. Here’s hoping for a great May.

10K Steps

Today as we were finishing up some lawn work, my arm vibrated. Ok so it was my Fitbit on my arm that vibrated to alert me that I had reached 10,000 steps. It took me by surprise because it didn’t seem like I had taken that many today.

It’s a Saturday and besides mowing the lawn, there is nothing I did that was really out of the ordinary. I’m glad to reach 10,000 steps without trying. It makes me sad that I can’t do this during the week. Stupid desk job.

10,000 steps. This is a goal that I’ve reached less than twenty times in the 3 plus years I’ve worn a Fitbit. Tomorrow I will try to reach 10,000 again with another goal of reaching 10K at least once during the week.

Things I learn at work..

That are way more interesting than work. One tidbit from this past week is banana ice cream. No, it’s not ice cream with bananas. It is banana ice cream as in the banana is the ice cream. Apparently if you freeze bananas and then use your food processor to mush them up long enough, it can pass for ice cream. So right now I am freezing some bananas to try this later tonight. I feel so let down by the Internet as I use it everyday but never had I ran across this recipe before.

But before I do that, we are making sugar eggs. If it turns out halfway decent then I will do a blog post about it. If it turns out terrible I will do a blog post about it. Although if it turns out great then I will be very excited to share. I had one when I was a kid and loved it so am hoping daughter enjoys making one.

stuff_things

It’s been a quiet week. It seems spring is arriving so I’d say we have about two weeks to enjoy pleasant temperatures. I am surprised that our trees still have leaves on them since most seem to be all over the yard.

I did get a new phone. A Samsung Galaxy Note 4. It’s nice. Glad to be rid of the iPhone. I love my iPad and iPod but the iPhone just didn’t have what I needed in a phone. What I really wanted was a Windows 8 phone but will wait until more apps are available.

So that’s been about it. Nothing too exciting. I won’t bore you any longer and hopefully will have a good report this week about the sugar eggs.

Week Wrap #2

stuff_things

This week is Spring Break but last week wasn’t and is the focus of this weekly wrap. Not too much happened. It was cold then was warmer and then back to frigidly cold. Besides the weather, we were able to play our weekly Dungeons and Dragons game where my character was much more useful to the party. We also gained enough experience to make it to 3rd level. This is where my character will really hopefully begin to shine.

We almost bought a second Xbox One but didn’t. We did get a second controller for our first one. The husband bought Minecraft for Xbox and found it was multi-player. So naturally it was time to get another controller. We also bought Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U and a few amiibos. That has been taking some our free time but it is also creating family time, too.

The time change sucks but on the bright side all of the clocks downstairs are once again display the correct time. I have forgotten how to set the time on my alarm clock so I woke up at the old time which was way past when I normally wake up but was okay since we didn’t have to worry about school. That will give me a few days to figure it out or either buy a new alarm clock.

Overall a quite week but those are nice every once in a while.

Kano Computer

Kickstarter is an amazing place. There are so many cool projects. It’s just fun to browse what others are doing. One project we back was Kano – a computer anyone can make. It’s a full working computer driven by Raspberry Pi and Linux. It appealed to us for our daughter since we have built our own computers before. We thought it would be a fun project for her to build one and then use it.

We were glad to see this one arrive. Our daughter was excited, too.

kano1

A closer look inside before we got down to the task at hand.

kano2

Unpacking everything and still very interested especially when she came across the stickers.

kano3

Here is a page from the instruction manual that laid out how to put everything together. The booklet was a story which made the boring instructions fun.

kano4

This is such a tiny keyboard but for small hands it doesn’t really matter.

kano5

Now we are getting somewhere with the help of Daddy of course.

kano6

The Kano computer project is complete! Now time to set up the account and get started.

kano7

Unfortunately we put it all together but really haven’t used it much since. The Kano needs to find a permanent home somewhere in our house because I think Rae would enjoy tinkering with it especially to make video games or Minecraft mods. It was a fun project and we have enjoyed it so far even if we have seldom used it.

Make Bananas Last Longer

Bananas..one of my favorite foods. The thing about bananas is that they just do not last that long so when I saw a pin on Pinterest on using aluminum foil to make bananas last longer I had to try it. Here are the results:

Day One
You would expect day one results to be good.

banana_foil_1

Day Two

Not bad..

banana_foil_day2

Day Three

Possibly slightly better than no foil bananas.

banana_foil_day3

Day Four

Still looks good. Stop eating the bananas! But they are so good.

banana_foil_day4

Day Five

The bananas made it to day five before they were all eaten.

banana_foil_day5

I think that the foil helped but not sure it was a very noticeable difference. Our bananas usually last that long and are still not overripe. But at least now I know. I will just forego the foil when it comes to bananas.

Week Wrap

Why, yes I am doing a weekly wrap on Friday. I’m not sure I posted last but since I plan on blogging more in March and want to start a weekly catch-all post, why not start that today? So here are some things that caught my eye on the Internet or otherwise this week. You know..stuff..and things..

stuff_things

Dry Shampoo
Sure I’ve heard of dry shampoo for cats and even bought it for ours before but there is dry shampoo for humans. This is a product that I must try as it never fails. Wednesday comes along and I wake up -late for work – and with oily hair. This product would make the middle of the week a lot easier for us. My daughter will get oily hair about mid-week and refuses to do anything about it saying it’s fine with her. So now with something like this we could at least give the appearance that we groom as much as we should. An Update – I found dry shampoo at Target and tried it today(the day after I started this post) and like the results.

dry_shampoo

I should have taken a before picture, too. But my hair is definitely less oily and fluffier.

THE Dress
This is not referring to some dress worn at the Oscars or a “wardrobe malfunction” but the dress that has been blowing up social media. It’s a dress that looks either white/gold or black/blue or any shade of those in between. I’ve heard purple/brown for instance. Anyway what is great about the Internet and things that go viral is that they become old and boring very quickly. In six months someone will read this post and have absolutely no idea about this dress. Don’t ever change, Internet.

reaper

Reaper minis

Way back in 2013, my husband backed a Kickstarter for Reaper minis. This week they were shipped and delivered! The base set has 140 minis and we got a few of the add-ons. So there are quite a few miniatures to paint. Exciting stuff. I am not that great at painting minis but looks like I will be getting in some practice. We are considering attending ReaperCon in April so this is a great way to get in some practice and an idea of what I might like to learn if we attend.

Clean Towels

When I do laundry I never use bleach. Today while doing a load of beige towels that were for the most part white now, they looked dingy and had a pinkish tint probably from being washed with a red or pink towel. So I used some bleach and the towels look amazing.

This weekly wrap has taken way too long to complete. It is now Sunday so it is actually a weekly wrap. Next week’s task is to write the weekly wrap in one day and on Sunday.
